How do lawyers go about hiring legal secretaries?

I would like to know what type of skills and experience lawyers look for in legal secretaries. Also, how do they advertise for these jobs? Or do they depend on legal secretaries to approach their firms? I don't have any relevant experience, but I'm trying to break into this field. Any information will be a big help. Thanks!

  1. Law firms hire legal secretaries by word of mouth, advertising in the help wanted section, and by recruiting through local schools and colleges. The skills and experience wanted will vary by how junior or senior a person they want (it varies between firms.) Some like highly experienced secretaries, others want entry level so they can train them according to their own methods. Good luck -- the recession has hit law firms as much as banks, and many are not hiring (focus on firms that specialize in foreclosures and bankruptcy -- they may be doing better right now.)
