How can I ensure my stolen property was reported to the NCIC?

My laptop and 22" LCD monitor were stolen in November. I reported the serial numbers to the police. She scribbled them down on a little pad of paper and I want to know that the correct serial numbers are listed.

Public Comments

  1. Call her and bloody well ask for a report copy.
  2. The NCIC entry is not going to be part of the original report. That goes in a separate folder, and kept with other NCIC entries. These folders are not public record, like your report is. All you can do is ask the officer, or the warrant entry person. I don't see any reason why the officer would not want to do this, it requires very little work.
  3. Contact the police department handling the case. Some departments DO NOT enter stolen articles such as your computer. I work for a rural Sheriff's office and many years before I started, it was determined that maintaining stolen article files would be too much for the one records tech the office has to this day. We generally enter only vehicles, boats and guns. Unfortunately, that is the choice law enforcement has when it has to choose between personnel on the street and support staff in the office.
