How do I protect my intellectual property rights of the poetry that I wrote?

  2. Well, technically, you don't have to really do anything. A written work is protected by a copyright and there is such a thing as a "common-law" copyright, which means the minute you write something down in a tangible medium, (i.e. on paper or a computer), you have a copyright in it. The issue is often "when" (as in, if two people come up with same work, who did it first?). Some writers/artists just mail themselves the work and use the postmark as evidence (leaving it sealed). The safest way to mark the date of creation and protect your copyright is to register your copyright with the US government. Registration provides a public record of your authorship and protects your work for 70 years after your death. Check the US Patent and Trademark Office website for more info. Click on "copyright".
